As per one recent data from CDC, out of 2550 women with Zika in US and US territories, 1500 were confirmed cases. Out of these cases, only around 5% resulted in birth defect. This data might not reflect confounding effects such as, SES, maternal health and awareness. As per an earlier epidemiological secondary research study, low SES, employment status of parents, and low education levels elevate risks for anencephaly, dextrotransposition of the great arteries, cleft palate, tetralogy of fallot. Based on my earlier work shared below, along with above-mentioned details, addressing the root cause of the problem will alleviate complications coming out of Zika, and similar such viruses on new born babies.
